Abstract

Private juvenile residential facilities held 39,671 juveniles on February 15, 1995, compared to 35,626 in 1993 and 36,190 held in 1991. This constituted a 9.6-percent increase between 1991 and 1995. The proportion of male juveniles held in private facilities increased from 71.3 percent to 73.5 percent between 1991 and 1995. The number of females held increased 13 percent in this same period, from 25,801 to 29,176. From 1991 to 1995, the number of white youth in private residential facilities increased 2.6 percent while the number of Black youth increased 15 percent, and the number of Hispanic youth increased 31 percent. The increase in the number of minority youth was greater than the 11-percent of their growth in the overall population. Although the majority of juveniles were under 15 years old, the fastest growing segment of the private-facility population was 16 years old or older. 6 tables
