In this brief video, Daniel Stewart, a law enforcement officer who commands a property crime unit in his department, talks about his experience as a participant in the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (LEADS) Program, during which he is focusing on research pertinent to optimal investigator caseloads.

Abstract

Although he does not talk much about his particular research, he discusses his experience in the LEADS Program, which has given him a new perspective on the role of research in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement agencies. He also mentions the value of interacting with other officers in the LEADS Program, who are oriented toward the value of research and data analysis in identifying and addressing challenges and making improvements in law enforcement policies and practices. In Stewart's case, he is conducting research pertinent to the management of caseloads for property crime investigators. Such research will provide insight on the number of investigators his property-crime unit needs to maintain caseload levels that maximize the effectiveness of investigations.
