This video and its transcript cover an interview with Karen D. Carroll - associate director of the Bronx Sexual Assault Response Team (New York) - at the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) 2010 Conference, in which she speaks from a practitioner's perspective as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) in support of NIJ-funded evaluation research.
Abstract
As a SANE, she provides services to women, men, boys, and girls in the immediate aftermath of the severe trauma of sexual assault. Recognition of the cost-effectiveness of her work and continuing funding support is based in research that has found when these first responders are compassionate and understanding while treating victims with dignity, the victims are more likely to commit to the rest of the criminal justice process. It is important that NIJ's research on criminal justice policies and practices continue to be funded in order to ensure that innovative practices are assessed for their cost-effectiveness and continue to be supported and expanded.
