The sixth volume of this publication on keeping the nation's schools safe presents a new compilation of articles posted on the website SchoolSafetyInfo.org in the past year.
Abstract
The intent of this volume is the same as the previous five volumes, i.e., to share ideas and resources regarding how schools and communities throughout the nation are planning and implementing programs and practices intended to make schools safer for the students, staff, and community. Among the projects described in this article are the development of a school police department in Atlanta city schools; a free online comic book for classroom use that was created by a resource officer to gain student attention on ways to make themselves and their schools safer; and a volunteer program that uses parents to be perceptive observers of risk for school safety. A fourth resource described is a new desktop version of the popular app "School Safe," which was produced by the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Justice Technology Information Center (JTIC). Another resource discusses how improving school climate influences positive youth development, which contributes to safer schools. Another resource featured is the Youth Education and Safety in Schools (Y.E.S.S.) program, developed by the Douglas County (Colorado) Sheriff's Office. Because this program has drawn national attention, its materials are provided free on the website Digital Futures Initiative (www.dfinow.org).
