Abstract
Minimum requirements are specified for user information to be provided by the manufacturer, visual inspection, dimensions, functions, firing, drop safety, and drop malfunctions. Visual inspection pertains to hammer travel, foreign particles, and surface condition. Dimensional requirements involve the barrel bore diameter and headspace. Functional requirements address action, ejection, trigger and hammer action, safety features, and magazine capacity and action. The firing requirement focuses on the number of ammunition rounds to be fired with no mechanical failures and a specified maximum number of malfunctions. Drop safety requires that the pistol not fire when dropped, and only three malfunctions may occur after a drop. The test methods described encompass not only compliance with the foregoing requirements but also special test equipment and sampling requirements. The standard does not address specific safety devices, full or partial magazine release, pistol shot group size (accuracy), nor sights. These topics are discussed in the appendix.
