This article reviews available accessories for bike patrols.
Abstract
The safety, performance, and comfort of officers on bike patrol can be enhanced by gathering the correct bike parts and accessories. Among the parts and accessories reviewed here are saddles; lighting systems; sirens; pedal retention toe clips, straps, and clipless; tires; rear racks/bags; and hydration. In addition to reviewing the best equipment in these areas, the author offers a list of suggested accessories for bike patrol officers that includes a rear mount kickstand, tire repair kits, adjustable stems, and bar extenders. An anatomical saddle is also recommended; this type of saddle is harder and narrower, with a groove or a cut-out down the center to relieve pressure. Saddle pressure has had major deleterious outcomes for female and male bikers. A multi-use lighting system is also touted as one of the most crucial accessories an officer can have on his or her bike. No matter the accessories chosen, quality and functionality should be foremost on an officer’s mind.
