Crossband radios provide a solution for interoperability between different agencies, regardless of the radio technology. With the adoption of digital P25 technology, crossbanding from digital P25 to VHF AM aviation radios will be required and supported, allowing public safety agencies to communicate between its officers and helicopters in a digital P25 environment. A crossband repeater allows a radio in one frequency band to be cross-connected with a second radio in a different frequency band. On common situation that benefits by using an air-to-ground crossband repeater is a joint search and rescue involving ground personnel and aircraft or helicopters. Similarly, fire fighting agencies, particularly forest fire crews, can communicate between the ground crews fighting the fire and the helicopters and water bombers providing assistance. Crossbanding radios provide a simple and effective means of allowing interoperability between different radio technologies and different agencies, thereby supporting air-to-ground.
