Abstract
THIS DOCUMENT INTRODUCES A CALIFORNIA BASED PROJECT UNDERTAKEN TO ORGANIZE THE RESULTS OF AN EXTENSIVE DATA COLLECTION ON THE YOUTHFUL OFFENDER AND TO PROVIDE A RESOURCE FOR THE CORRECTIONAL THEORIST WORKING WITH THIS IMPORTANT OFFENDER GROUP. THE PROJECT OBTAINED DATA ON 4,146 MALE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY PAROLEES TO DETERMINE CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAY BE RELATED TO PAROLE SUCCESS AND TO FORM A BASIS FOR TYPOLOGICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS THAT CAN BE UTILIZED BY THE CORRECTIONAL PRACTITIONER IN HIS EFFORTS TOWARD REHABILITATION AND TREATMENT. THE DATA COVERED PERSONALITY AND OTHER TEST RESULTS, ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS AND APTITUDES, AND PSYCHIATRIC FACTORS, AS WELL AS OFFENSE RELATED INFORMATION AND THE RATINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF INSTITUTIONAL STAFFS. THIS FIRST VOLUME OF THE REPORT DISCUSSES THE INSTITUTIONAL SETTING OF THE STUDY, THE TESTING PROGRAM AT THE RECEPTION GUIDANCE CENTER AT DEUEL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTION, THE STUDY POPULATION, GENERAL AND SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON THE VARIABLES EMPLOYED IN THE STUDY, AND CONCEPTUAL ISSUES IN CLASSIFICATION AND GROUNDED THEORY. INDIVIDUAL CASE HISTORY INFORMATION AND COMPARATIVE DATA FOR THE ENTIRE STUDY POPULATION ON MOST OF THE 195 VARIABLES UTILIZED IN THE STUDY ARE ALSO PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (SNI ABSTRACT)
