Abstract

This chapter explores how the scientific method is applicable to research studies in skeletal biology. It aims to provide the novice skeletal biologist with the necessary knowledge and tools to initiate and complete their own research project. It addresses the following: how the scientific method is applied to skeletal biology, how to develop a research question, and logistics of the subsequent project. The chapter first has several key concepts relevant for initiating scientific studies, including a discussion of what science can and cannot do. It then takes the reader step-by-step through the scientific method and gives examples relevant to skeletal biology. This is followed by a detailed discussion of ways in which research ideas can be generated. (Publisher abstract provided.)
