Abstract
The original information contained in these slides can be found on the Introduction to Biometrics page at the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC's) Web site, www.biometrics.gov. The slides present information on the definitions used in biometrics; a description of biometric predecessors; the need for standards in the field of biometrics, a description of a true biometric system; how biometric systems work and how they are used; biometric implementation factors, biometric modalities; biometric system components; different biometric processes such as face recognition, iris recognition, fingerprint recognition, hand/finger geometry, and other recognition methods; a discussion of privacy issues; and why biometrics are an important governance tool.
