This report discusses the crucial issues considered at a 1990 forum that brought more than 650 local, State, and Federal officials and others together to discuss the future of criminal justice in Illinois.
Abstract
Trends and issues were identified in law enforcement, efforts to address drug abuse, finances and planning, technological advances, education and training, juvenile justice, correctional alternatives, victim services, the role of the media, and the role of citizens. A central theme of the discussions was that the success of criminal justice agencies in the 1990's will depend to a great extent on how responsive and accountable they are to the needs, the concerns, and the ideas of the communities they serve. To be successful, criminal justice agencies will have to respond not only to individual crimes and individual criminals but also to the larger problems that contribute to crime and unrest in their communities.
