This article discusses specialized records automation software impleplemented by some campus police agencies to track officers’ professional training.
Abstract
Several campus police agencies have improved their services by implementing specialized software for tracking police officers’ professional training, and thereby improving the efficacy of maintaining, monitoring, and reporting data. The recent shooting incidents on some of America’s college and university campuses have heightened the need for increased training among campus police agencies. As training has expanded with many new certification categories, tracking all of these for each officer has grown more complex, prompting many campus police departments to transition manual tracking of officers’ record to automation using specialized software. Towson University, MD; Kent State University, OH; and California State University-Fullerton Police Department, are at the forefront of superior training management due, in part, to the use of customized software specifically designed for small to medium scale public safety agencies. Officers are required by individual State commissions to complete a certain amount of in-service training to become recertified. The database documents that officers have attended all of their required training classes, and makes it easier to submit the mandated training data to each ruling commission. Additionally, there is a growing trend among more campus law enforcement agencies to pursue accreditation. Training management software can help a police agency more easily achieve accreditation which ultimately improves law enforcement services. By participating in the challenging accreditation process of self-assessment, and critically reviewing the law enforcement or security agency’s orders, directives, policies and procedures, the agency’s services will be vastly improved.
