This fourth volume of the 1983 Census of Local Jails presents data by State, county, and facility for States in the West (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming).
Abstract

Four data tables cover inmate population, jail capacity, and jails under court order on June 3, 1983; inmate population by detention status on June 3, 1983, and average daily population; inmates held for Federal, State, and other local authorities on June 30, 1983; and inmates held for other authorities on June 3, 1983, for crowding and other reasons. Other inmate data address population movement during July 1, 1982, to June 30, 1983, and inmate deaths for July 1, 1982, through June 30, 1983. Facility statistics cover jails by detention authority and sex of adult/juvenile inmates; number of confinement units, beds, and inmates by confinement unit use; confinement space; planned changes in jails and cost; expenditures; and number and type of jail payroll and nonpayroll employees. Information on jail programs and operations address work release and weekend sentence programs, exercise activities, medical screening and assessments, medical physical exams, and medical facilities and personnel. 18 tables and questionnaire
