A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PERSONS UNDER THE UNITED STATES PROBATION SYSTEM REFERRED BY COURTS, U.S. MAGISTRATES, AND UNDER DEFERRED PROSECUTION AND PAROLEES AND MANDATORY RELEASES FROM FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
THE PROBATIONERS ARE CHARACTERIZED DEMOGRAPHICALLY BY AGE, PRIOR CRIMINAL RECORD, AND OFFENSE. THE 1968 STATISTICS ARE BASED ON COMPUTER SUMMARIES SUPPLIED FROM A CASE REPORTING SYSTEM SUBMITTED TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES COURTS BY THE FEDERAL PROBATION SYSTEM. FOR THE JANUARY 1973 CENSUS, THE INDIVIDUAL FEDERAL PROBATION OFFICES WERE ASKED TO FURNISH SUMMARY REPORTS ON PERSONS UNDER SUPERVISION. IN ADDITION, A DETAILED APPENDIX PROVIDES FOR EACH DISTRICT COURT COMPARATIVE FIGURES ON AGE, PRIOR CRIMINAL RECORD AND OFFENSE FOR THE CENSUS DATES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
