A DESCRIPTION OF EIGHT SEPARATE COMPARISONS OF QUESTINNAIRE DATA COLLECTED ABOUT 123 MALE CLIENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM AT THE GEORGIA INDUSTRIAL INSTITUTE (GII).
Abstract
REHABILITATION COUNSELOR RATED 78 ITEMS PERTAINING TO EACH CLIENT'S BIOGRAPHICAL AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND BEHAVIOR. THE RATINGS WERE MADE AT THE TIME EACH CLIENT WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE PRISON INTO CIVILIAN LIFE. CLIENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM AT GII ARE TO A CERTAIN EXTENT SCREENED, SO THAT THESE CLIENTS ARE NOT STRICTLY REPRESENTATIVE OF ALL PRISONERS AT GII. THE EIGHT ANALYSES REPORTED IN THIS STUDY ARE: (1) COMPARISONS OF DATA BASED ON RACE, (2) COMPARISONS BASED ON PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF FAMILY CRIMINAL RECORD, (3) COMPARISONS BASED ON PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF A PREVIOUS CRIMINAL RECORD, (4) ANALYSES BASED ON NUMBER OF ACCOMPLICES, (5) ANALYSES COMPARING POOR PROGNOSTIC RATING INMATES WITH FAVORABLE PROGNOSITC RATING INMATES, (6) COMPARISONS BASED ON FAVORABLE OR UNFAVORABLE INSTITUTIONAL BEHAVIOR, (7) COMPARISONS BASED ON THE NATURE OF OFFENSE COMMITTED, AND (8) COMPARISONS BASED ON THE TECHNICAL CHARGE INMATES HAD LODGED AGAINST THEM. AMONG THE FINDINGS WERE THAT BLACK CLIENTS WERE ARRESTED AT A SIGNIFICANTLY EARLIER AGE THAN WHITE CLIENTS, THAT WHITE CLIENTS WERE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL MORE OFTEN THAN BLACKS AT THE TIME OF THEIR OFFENSE, AND THAT CLIENTS COMMITTING IMPULSIVE CRIMES TENDED TO SCORE HIGHER ON THE INTELLIGENCE TEST GIVEN. OTHER FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
