STATISTICAL PROFILE OF PUBLIC FACILITIES WHICH SERVE JUVENILES AWAITING COURT ACTION AS WELL AS THOSE ALREADY ADJUDICATED.
Abstract
THE 1971 CENSUS COVERS 722 FACILITIES. THE ADMINISTRATION OF THESE INSTITUTIONS WAS FOUND TO BE ALMOST EQUALLY DIVIDED BETWEEN STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. ON JUNE 30, 1971, THESE FACILITIES HELD 57,239 PERSONS - 44,140 MALES AND 13,099 FEMALES. NEARLY ALL THE PERSONS HELD, SOME 99 PERCENT, WERE REPORTED AS JUVENILES BY THE FACILITIES THAT HELD THEM. THE TERM 'JUVENILE' OR 'CHILD' AS USED IN THIS REPORT, REFERS TO AN INDIVIDUAL OVER WHOSE DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR THE JUVENILE COURT HAS ORIGINAL JURISDICTION. THE DOCUMENT STATISTICALLY DESCRIBES THE JUVENILE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM'S INTAKE AND PROCESSING FACILITIES AND CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES INCLUDING DETENTION CENTERS, SHELTERS, RECEPTION AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTERS, TRAINING SCHOOLS, RANCHES, FORESTRY CAMPS, FARMS, HALFWAY HOUSES, AND GROUP HOMES. A PROFILE OF THE JUVENILES BEING HELD AT THESE INSTITUTIONS IS GIVEN AND VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THEIR CARE ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING HOLDING PATTERNS, OCCUPANCY, COUNSELING, EDUCATION AND JOB PLACEMENT, AND MEDICAL SERVICES. INSTITUTIONAL PERSONNEL, EXPENDITURES, AND PHYSICAL PLANT CONDITIONS ARE ALSO COVERED. IN ADDITION TO THE NARRATIVE DESCRIPTIONS, NUMEROUS TABLES ARE PROVIDED FOR NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND STATE DATA.
