Abstract

This document, prepared by the National Institute of Corrections, describes efforts by public officials in King County, WA, to improve public safety through the development of a multi-city consolidated jail. The facility, which opened in September 2011, was built by the SCORE Public Development Authority as "a cooperative venture among seven cities in South King County ... to form a single purpose government to build and operate a consolidated regional jail." In 2012, the facility received the Municipal Excellence Award from the Association of Washington Cities in the category of Public Safety. The award was given to SCORE (South Correctional Entity Multijurisdictional Misdemeanant Jail) because it sets an example of the ability of multiple agencies to cooperate and work together to provide a high level of service to its members.
