The New York City Police Department's communication network is one of the most advanced in the world, and this training guide familiarizes participants in the Law Enforcement Explorer Program with basic features of portable radios, communication functions, information transmitted by radio, and radio code signals.
Abstract
The training guide describes proper methods for safeguarding portable radios, explains how a 911 call reaches police officers and why radio code signals are used in police communication, emphasizes the importance of keeping radio dispatchers informed of police officer locations, and states the minimum safe distance a police officer must be from blasting operations prior to radio transmission. The operation of portable radios and police communication procedures are described, and a list of radio code signals is provided. The phonetic alphabet used by New York City police to eliminate confusion when transmitting individual alphabet letters is included.
