Abstract
THE COMMUNITY SERVICE ORDER SCHEME PRESENTS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INCARCERATION THROUGH WHICH AN OFFENDER PERFORMS WORK USEFUL TO THE COMMUNITY, SUCH AS BUILDING PLAYGROUNDS OR REPAIRING NURSING HOMES. REASONS FOR THE SUCCESS AND FAILURE OF PARTICIPANTS IN THE SCHEME ARE DISCUSSED. THE APPENDIXES CONTAIN STATISTICAL INFORMATION ON THE LENGTHS OF THE ORDERS, COURTS OF JURISDICTION, AND PREVIOUS OFFENSES.
