Abstract
THE REPORT IS THE FIRST STEP IN DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE JUVENILE OFFENDER-BASED INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR THE COUNTY. DATA ON ALL JUVENILES ARRESTED BY THE ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT WERE EXAMINED. FOR THEE GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS, 145 DATA ANALYSIS ZONES (DAZ'S) WERE DEFINED IN TERMS OF HOMOGENEOUS NEIGHBORHOODS AND NATURAL BOUNDARIES. OVER 38 PERCENT OF ALL THE JUVENILE VIOLATIONS WERE COMMITTED IN 10 PERCENT OF THE DAZ'S. STEALING ACCOUNTED FOR THE GREATEST NUMBER OF VIOLATIONS. DAZ'S WITH MAJOR SHOPPING CENTERS WERE MAJOR SITES OF STEALING. HISPANIC AND BLACK JUVENILES AND MALES AGED 16 AND 17 WERE DISPROPORTIONATELY REPRESENTED AMONG THOSE ARRESTED FOR VIOLENT OFFENSES AND SEX VIOLATIONS. FEMALES AND YOUTHS AGED 10 TO 13 WERE DISPROPORTIONATELY REPRESENTED AMONG THOSE ARRRESTED FOR STEALING VIOLATIONS. STEALING VIOLATIONS WERE CONCENTRATED IN THE 3 TO 5 P.M. TIME PERIOD. MOST JUVENILES ARRESTED FOR LIQUOR VIOLATIONS WERE 16 AND 17-YEAR OLD MALES. MOST DRUG ARRESTEES WERE 16 AND 17-YEAR OLD WHITES. ALMOST HALF OF THOSE ARRESTED FOR CURFEW AND RUNAWAY VIOLATIONS WERE FEMALES. FEMALES ACCOUNTED FOR 28.6 PERCENT OF THE WHITES ARRESTED, 21.3 PERCENT OF THE HISPANICS, 32 PERCENT OF THE BLACKS, AND 41.5 PERCENT OF THE INDIANS. THE PROPORTIONS OF ARRESTEES WITH NUCLEAR FAMILIES RANGED FROM 58.5 PERCENT FOR WHITES TO 38.6 PERCENT FOR INDIANS. FIGURES, TABLES, MAPS, AND DATA COLLECTION FORMS ARE INCLUDED.
