Corrections Statistical Analysis Tool (CSAT) - Parole

13 pages
This User's Guide for the parole component of the Corrections Statistical Analysis Tool (CSAT) describes the features of and how to access and use the CSAT, which is accessible on the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics' (BJS') home page (available from this NCJRS entry) for data on parolees from the Annual Parole Survey.
Users of the CSAT can quickly generate tables of counts of persons on parole supervision at year-end, supervision rates, and the number of persons entering and exiting parole supervision. This web tool includes national, Federal, and State data. The custom tables enable users to access counts of the year-end parole population by sex, race or Hispanic origin, maximum sentence length, most serious offense, status of supervision, type of release from prison, and type of entry to and exit from parole. This guide provides detailed instructions and illustrations for accessing the tool at the BJS home page (http://www.bjs.gov/). The guide also distinguishes between "quick" and "custom" tables the tool makes available to users. Other sections of this guide provide information on BJS' Annual Parole Survey and Annual Probation Survey (a related data collection); definitions of key terms used in the tool; documents related to the Annual Parole Survey and Annual Probation Survey; and instructions on how to cite data from the CSAT when publishing its data tables.
