The Department of Justice has already initiated many of the programs and policies needed to address the major challenges it faces in law enforcement and justice, including international criminal organizations that deal in illegal drug trafficking, terrorism, and violence; serious white collar crime; environmental protection; and the need to ensure equal opportunity in all areas.
Abstract
Legislative initiatives focus on increasing sentences for using firearms when committing a crime, the increased use of capital punishment, adding a "good faith" exception to the exclusionary rule, and habeas corpus reform. Enforcement efforts have focused on drug law offenses, savings and loan fraud, securities and commodities fraud, defense procurement fraud, the corruption of public officials, and organized crime. The Department's activities have also focused on addressing antitrust issues, representing the government in civil litigation, and strengthening international law enforcement efforts.
