THIS VOLUME PRESENTS A STATISTICAL OVERVIEW OF CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN IOWA SINCE 1974, BEGINNING WITH REPORTED CRIMES AND ARRESTS AND FOLLOWING OFFENDERS' MOVEMENTS THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THIS VOLUME IS THE FIRST IN A SERIES DESIGNED TO INCREASE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO AID AGENCIES IN PLANNING AND MANAGING CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS AND OPERATIONS UNDER PRESENT CONDITIONS OF BOTH FISCAL RESTRAINT AND INCREASES IN CRIMES AND ARRESTS. DATA PRESENTED ARE BASED ON DATA FROM THE FBI, THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, THE IOWA BOARD OF PAROLE, AND THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. MOST DATA COVER THE PERIOD FROM 1974 THROUGH 1977, AND THEREFORE DO NOT REFLECT CHANGES RESULTING FROM IOWAS'S REVISED CRIMINAL CODE WHICH TOOK EFFECT ON JANUARY 1, 1978. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: REPORTED CRIMES, ARRESTS, PRETRIAL RELEASE, COURT DELAYS, FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT, NEW CHARGES AGAINST PRETRIAL RELEASES, COURT DISPOSITION, FELONY SENTENCING, PROFILES OF CONVICTED OFFENDERS, CORRECTIONAL POPULATIONS, PROBATION, PRISON RELEASE RATES AND TIME SERVED, AND PAROLE.
