Abstract
A 5-year comparison of index offenses is followed by a review of crime trends for 1989 compared to 1988 and data on the frequency of various offenses and offense types in 1989. Offense statistics cover murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, and domestic assault. Data also cover the number of police officers assaulted, the value of property stolen and recovered, crime by county and contributor, crime rates per county, 1989 arrest totals, juvenile arrests, and adult arrests. During 1989 serious offenses rose 7.7 percent over last year. This included a 38.5-percent increase in homicide and 24 percent more rape cases reported. The only major crime category to show a decline was aggravated assault, down 30.4 percent from last year. For the second consecutive year, drug-related arrests increased (3.4 percent). Drunk driving apprehensions increased 2 percent, and liquor law violations 6.7 percent. Glossary of terms and Part II offense definitions
