North Dakota's Uniform Crime reporting program presents data on crime and arrests reported by local law enforcement agencies throughout the State for 2003.
Abstract
Crime index offenses include murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft. In 2003, 13,015 crime index offenses were reported to police in North Dakota, a 14.6-percent decrease from 2002. The index crime rate per 100,000 populations was 2,052.8, compared with 2,403.2 for 2002. There were 499 reported violent index crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), a 9.8-percent decrease from 2002. Violent crime accounted for 3.8 percent of index crimes reported in 2003, collectively, property crimes (burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft) decreased by 14.8 percent from 2002. Property crime accounted for 96.2 percent of crime index offenses reported. Of the property crimes, larceny/theft offenses accounted for 74.5 percent of total index crimes. Just over $11.4 million worth of property was reported stolen in 2003, with 31.5 percent of this amount recovered by law enforcement officials. A total of 30,334 arrests were reported in 2003, compared with 29,145 arrests reported in 2002. Juvenile arrests accounted for 23.9 percent of total arrests. Arrests for driving under the influence increased to 4,854 from 4,467 reported in 2002; and arrests for drug offenses increased 16.7 percent from the previous year. The number of full-time law enforcement employees is presented for each agency, broken down by sworn and civilian personnel as well as gender; population size for each jurisdiction is also indicated.
