This report was prepared in response to Resolution 1989/68, taken by the United Nations Economic and Social Council with regard to crime prevention and criminal justice, and reports on action taken by the UN General Assembly at its 44th session.
Abstract
The General Assembly adopted resolutions on international cooperation in combatting organized crime and on human rights in the administration of justice. The Council continued preparations for the Eighth UN Congress on the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders. Technical cooperation activities highlighted in this report include interregional advisory services, interregional Seminar on Corruption in Government, cooperation with the UN Fund for Drug Abuse Control, and cooperation with the Human Rights Advisory Program. The Council also took further steps to establish the African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders and sought to ensure support for its activities. Other topics covered in this report include implementation of UN standards and norms in criminal justice, information network and exchange, and program planning.
