This summary report on crime in Texas during calendar year 1980 was compiled from data submitted by 728 Texas sheriffs and chiefs of police whose jurisdictions represent 97.9 percent of the State's population.
Abstract
Data are presented on arson, urban and rural crime, Index crimes, property offenses, clearance rates, arrests, and estimated offenses. Arson offenses totalled 9,602 during the year, causing an estimated $86,300,906 in property damage. The clearance rate for murders in the State was 76 percent; over 2,000 murders were reported. There were 6,441 forcible rapes reported and 27,694 robberies. Data on murder, rape, robbery aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft are given for cities and counties according to population levels, and the amount of campus crime and crime at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is recorded. The amount of property stolen and recovered is given by type of property, and the number of offenses and clearances by month in 1980 is included. A summary of both juvenile and adult arrest data by type of offense is also presented. The report notes that a major crime occurred every 36 seconds, with one murder every 3 hours and 41 minutes, one rape every 1 hour and 19 minutes, and one theft every 70 seconds.
