This fact sheet provides a summary of the DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction Program, with information about past accomplishments and funding.

Abstract

This brief fact sheet states that the overarching goal of the DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program is to increase the capacity of publicly funded forensic DNA and DNA database laboratories to process more DNA samples, and as a result, helping to reduce the number of forensic DNA and DNA database samples awaiting analysis. Funding under the CEBR Program supports three purposes: to carry out DNA analyses of database samples collected under applicable legal authority, for inclusion in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS); to carry out DNA analyses of forensic case/crime scene samples, for inclusion in CODIS; and to increase the capacity of publicly funded forensic DNA and DNA database laboratories. The sheet lists past program accomplishments, including the number of completed cases and database samples, databasing and forensic profiles uploaded to CODIS, and CODIS hits; it also lists the number of awards and total funding provided from 2011 through 2022.
