Contributors to this collection of proceedings from the United Nations Eighth Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders discuss the nature and extent of crime problems in their countries, strategies to prevent crime, and various law reform efforts.
Abstract
The seriousness and extent of the crime reported vary from country to country and from region to region due mostly to social, economic, political, and cultural factors; however, common features emerge which threaten social stability. Economic crimes, which also involve foreign financial and business organizations, have brought increasing corruption and related white-collar crime. These crimes present a danger to country progress and development. Additionally, a marked increase in international terrorist incidents has been reported; the number grew from 125 in 1968 to 831 in 1987. Incisive action and mutual cooperation are called for at all levels to provide the needed collective and effective response to contemporary crime. 150 footnotes, 1 table, and 245 references
