The performance of the X-Swab (Diomics Corporation, LaJolla, CA) in recovering and obtaining a DNA typing result from collected biological material was compared with the performance of the Copan 4N6FLOQSwab (Brescia, Italy).
Abstract
Overall, the X-Swab material produced greater DNA recovery, particularly of low-quantity samples (defined as diluted neat samples) compared with the 4N6FLOQSwab. Also, results indicated that X-Swab material enhances the yield of PCR products. The X-Swab is a unique bio-specimen collection material with highly absorptive properties and can be dissolved during certain extraction conditions. The features of this material enable it to collect more DNA from a substrate and release more material for DNA extraction. Both types of swabs were impregnated with known amounts of DNA ad body fluids and allowed to air dry. In addition, blood was placed onto glass slides, allowed to dry, and then collected using both types of swabs. DNA recovery was assessed by DNA quantitation and by STR typing. 1 table, 6 figures, and 9 references
