FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL EXPENDITURE DATA FOR FISCAL YEAR 1970-71 AND EMPLOYMENT DATA FOR OCTOBER, 1971.
Abstract
SPECIFIC DATA ARE SUPPLIED FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, THE 50 STATE GOVERNMENTS, AND THE AGGREGATE OF THE LOCAL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT WITHIN EACH STATE. IN ADDITION, ESTIMATES HAVE BEEN PRODUCED FOR EACH STATE OF THE PERCENTUM OF THE STATE AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPENDITURE FUNDED AND EXPENDED BY UNITS OF GENERAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT. DATA ARE ALSO SHOWN FOR THE 15 LARGEST STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS (SMSA'S). THE PRESENTATION OF THE TABLES IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MAJOR PARTS - THE SUMMARY 'CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM' SECTION, SHOWING THE INTERRELATIONSHIP OF THE VARIOUS SECTORS OF THE SYSTEM, AND THE SIX 'SECTOR' SECTIONS, PROVIDING A FURTHER BREAKDOWN OF DATA ON PARTICULAR CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACTIVITIES - POLICE PROTECTION, JUDICAL, LEGAL SERVICES AND PROSECUTION, INDIGENT DEFENSE, CORRECTIONS, AND OTHER CRIMINAL JUSTICE FUNCTIONS. THE COLLECTED STATISTICS SHOW THAT LOCAL GOVERNMENTS CONTINUE TO SPEND MORE THAN THE FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS COMBINED FOR ALL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACTIVITIES AND THAT TWO-THIRDS OF THE TOTAL FULLTIME EQUIVALENT CRIMINAL JUSTICE EMPLOYEES OF ALL GOVERNMENTS ARE EMPLOYED BY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS.
