This Facility Toolkit provides facility and school administrators with tools that they can use to promote family involvement in a facility school.
Abstract
This Facility Toolkit provides tools intended to encourage families, including those who are reluctant, fearful, or unprepared, to become more involved and to encourage staff, including those who are doubtful, cynical, or unprepared, to persist in their efforts to engage families. Although the primary audience for this toolkit is facility and school administrators, other stakeholders including parent advocates, family organizations, and the court also may use these tools when working with facilities and families. This Facility Toolkit provides two types of tools. Tools 1-5 are intended for distribution to the students' families. Tools 6-8 are intended for use by facility staff. All are customizable to meet the unique needs of each facility and the families it serves. After customizing the materials, they can be duplicated and distributed to the family members of students enrolled in any facility's school. Tools for Families include: Tool 1: Family Guide; Tool 2: Sample Letter to parents; Tool 3: Contact List Template; Tool 4: Sample Education Questionnaire with Cover Letter for Families; and Tool 5: Family Tip Sheet. Tools for Facilities include: Tool 6: Faculty and Staff Tip Sheet on Engaging Families; Tool 7: Facility Self-Assessment Tool; and Tool 8: Family Engagement Planner.
