Abstract
This June/July 2014 digital issue of Forensic Magazine contained nine articles dealing with forensic sciences. This first article discusses the need for applying AFIS (automated fingerprint identification system) technology on a case by case basis. The second article, Gunshot Residue Collection: The Decisions that Make or Break a Case, discusses the need for understanding the science behind GSR (gunshot residue) and using this knowledge to make informed decisions regarding the collection of GSR evidence. The third article discusses the importance of considering forensic gait analysis at crime scenes. The fourth article, Old Techniques, New Tricks, discusses the need for examiners to continue to learn about emerging technologies and techniques in the field of forensic science. The fifth article, Solid State Drives: Part 7 discusses forensic issues that need to be considered when conducting a forensic examination of a solid state drive. The sixth article discusses the benefits of certification for crime scene investigators. The seventh article describes a three step basic autoclave safety program. The eighth article examines potential changes for crime labs following the legalization of marijuana in 21 States and the District of Columbia. The ninth article discusses the problems associated with backlog in analyzing DNA evidence, especially in cases of rape.
