This article examines the efficiency and effectiveness of police in-car surveillance systems for gathering video evidence.
Abstract
The number of video cameras in police vehicles across the United States continues to grow. Research conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) found that video cameras in police vehicles enhanced officer safety, improved agency accountability, and reduced agency liability. Additional reasons for the growing acceptance of video surveillance is the advent of new wireless technology and less bulky equipment, as well as video that can now be recorded digitally and transferred quickly using wireless network technology which further protects the integrity of video evidence. Advantages of wireless video surveillance transfer solutions include: (1) lower costs; (2) ease of installation; (3) portability; (3) self-healing; (4) versatility; (5) lack of knowledge; and (6) insecure data.
