This article presents 68 of the 142 abstracts of papers presented at the Global Addiction Conference held in Lisbon, Portugal, in December 2011.
Abstract
All of the papers address some aspect of the features, causes, and treatment of some type of addiction. The addictions addressed include gambling, alcohol abuse, tobacco use, addiction to various types of drugs, addiction to medications, sexual addiction, Internet addiction, and relationship addiction. Factors in the addictive features of various behaviors and substances are discussed, and various medical and mental health treatments for various addictions are addressed. Studies of addiction are reported from various countries, including Portugal, Turkey, Finland, and a variety of European countries.
