Abstract
The term school zone means in or on the grounds of a public, parochial, or private school, or within a distance of 1,000 feet from school grounds. The term school means a school which provides elementary or secondary education. The penalty for violating the Gun-Free School Zones Act involves a fine of not more than $5,000, imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both. The Act encourages Federal, State, and local authorities to post signs around school zones to warn that the possession of firearms in these zones is prohibited. Exclusions in the Act's applicability are noted.
