Abstract
VOLINCOR PLACES VOLUNTEERS IN ALL BRANCHES AND UNITS OF THE CORRECTIONS SYSTEM, WHERE THEY BECOME INVOLVED IN COUNSELING, CASE MANAGEMENT, ADMINISTRATION, PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, CLERICAL WORK, PUBLIC RELATIONS, TUTORING, RECREATION, RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION, AND ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT. THE HANDBOOK PROVIDES VOLUNTEERS WITH AN OUTLINE OF THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM'S OBJECTIVES, A BRIEF HISTORY OF VOLUNTARISM IN CORRECTIONS, A DISCUSSION OF PRISONS AND PRISON LIFE, A FORMER INMATE'S PERSPECTIVE ON CRIME CAUSES AND THE NEEDS OF OFFENDERS, AN ORGANIZATIONAL CHART OF THE STATE CORRECTIONS AGENCY, AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE INSTITUTIONS AND PROGRAMS WITHIN THE AGENCY. GUIDELINES FOR WORKING WITH CORRECTIONAL STAFF AND WITH OFFENDERS (INCLUDING A LIST OF DO'S AND DON'T'S) ARE PRESENTED, AS ARE VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION'S CODE OF ETHICS. THE MANUAL ALSO PROVIDES INFORMATION ON VOLUNTEER TRAINING, REFERRAL AND AGREEMENTS, REPORTING, EVALUATION, AND TERMINATION. A SUMMARY OF WHAT THE VOLUNTEER MAY EXPECT AND WHAT ADMINISTRATORS, SUPERVISORS, AND INMATES MAY EXPECT OF VOLUNTEERS IS INCLUDED. FORMS ON WHICH VOLUNTEERS MAY RECORD THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE THEY GAIN THROUGH THEIR WORK ARE PROVIDED. ADDITIONAL FORMS, A GLOSSARY, AND A CORRECTIONS AGENCY DIRECTORY ARE APPENDED. (LKM)
