Abstract
Highlights from the article include the following: on any given night, an average of 82,000 people are homeless in Los Angeles County, with an estimated 254,000 men, women, and children experiencing homelessness sometime during the year; the average age of a homeless person is 40, with women tending to be younger; about 42 - 77 percent of the homeless population does not receive the public benefits to which they are entitled; about 25 percent of the homeless population is mentally ill; and 33 - 66 percent of the single homeless individuals have substance abuse issues. This Web article presents information on the state of the homeless population in Los Angeles County. Data for the study were collected by the Institute for the Study of Homelessness & Poverty at the Weingart Center.
