How Are Innovations in Technology Transforming Policing?

This 19th report in the Critical Issues series from the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) examines the impact that technology has on policing.
As part of the PERF Critical Issues in Policing Series this publication offers some current perspective on several technologies which have had considerable impact on how police departments do business. Results for a baseline survey found the following percentages of agencies (from the sample) using specific technologies: predictive policing (70 percent); in-car video recording (71 percent); wireless video streaming (46 percent); license plate readers (71 percent); GPS to track suspects (83 percent); GPS to track police vehicles (69 percent); social media to disseminate information (83 percent); and social media to receive information (70 percent). Also discussed are technological innovations, including gunshot detection systems and access to wireless broadband for the transmission of data. Appendix
