In advancing the mission of the International Association of Chiefs of Police's (IACP) Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, which aims to improve law enforcement's capacity to interdict firearms trafficking and disrupt gang activity, this Fact Sheet discusses how police-corrections partnerships can facilitate preventing future crimes by high-risk offenders.
Abstract
The structure for such partnerships consists off formal and informal agreements between police, sheriffs, and corrections agencies that define the goals of the partnership and the responsibilities of each agency. The initiative for the development of such agreements should come from police leaders. The implementation of the agreements should include the sharing of information about specific justice-involved individuals on probation and parole. This facilitates police awareness of high-risk offenders who are being supervised in the community. Police should share intelligence with corrections officials on individuals released from prison, including gang information, field interviews, and traffic stops. The partnership should be regularly monitored and evaluated to ensure that both law enforcement and corrections personnel incorporate the goals and methods of the partnership into their regular responsibilities and activities. Performance measures and goals of such partnerships should pertain to reducing crime, increasing officer safety, addressing community concerns, participating in intelligence-led policing, and improving productivity.
