This publication describes how someone might steal your social security number; what to do if you think someone is using your number, what to do if an identity thief is creating credit problems for you, what can be done if someone illegally uses your social security number, and how you can prevent him or her from further stealing your financial identity and your money. Included are details about how to prevent identity theft from happening and how to report it if you suspect it, and if you are a victim, learn how to get a new social security number. Also provided are links to file an online complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and a phone number to contact social security directly.
