ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF IMPLEMENTING THE JUVENILE JUSTICE STATUTE IN NEBRASKA, PARTICULARLY THE SECTIONS RELATING TO DETENTION OF STATUS OFFENDERS AND SEGREGATING ADULT AND JUVENILE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
DATA WAS COLLECTED OVER THE TELEPHONE IN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONNAIRES PREVIOUSLY MAILED TO COUNTY JUDGES. THE EVALUATION METHODOLOGY EMPLOYED INVOLVED THE COMPARISON OF CURRENT METHODS OF JUVENILE DETENTION IN EACH COUNTY IN NEBRASKA WITH TWO OF THE ELEMENTS OF COMPLIANCE REQUIRED BY THE ACT TO QUALIFY FOR FEDERAL ASSISTANCE. A STRONG SUGGESTION FOR THE ELIMINATION OF JURISDICTION OF JUVENILE COURTS OVER STATUS OFFENSES IS MADE BECAUSE OF STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE IDEA THAT JUDICIAL INTERVENTION HAS HAD A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE OFFENDERS AND THE SCARCITY OF RESOURCES.
