This report presents statistical data regarding the numbers and types of assaults, drug incidents, and other incidents involving inmates in California State correctional institutions between 1983 and 1992.
Abstract
A total of 4,982 inmate incidents occurred in California Department of Corrections institutions and camps in 1992. The rate of incidents increased from 4.3 in 1991 to 5.0 in 1992. However, since 1984 the rate of incidents has steadily declined from 12.7 in 1984 to 5.0 in 1992. Assaults accounted for 56.6 percent and drug incidents for 17.3 percent of the 1992 incidents. Nine male inmates were fatally assaulted in 1992. Staff have been the victims of 15 fatal assaults since 1970; the last one occurred in 1985. Assaults on staff increased from 919 in 1991 to 1,188 in 1992. The rate of inmate assaults on staff has steadily decreased since 1984. Figures and tables
