Abstract
The jurisdiction population profiled in this report includes the Massachusetts DOC criminally sentenced population incarcerated in DOC facilities as well those individuals housed in correctional facilities outside of the DOC. This report present the demographic characteristics of the 9,610 inmates within the DOC jurisdiction, as of January 1, 2002, through a series of figures and tables. After presenting the inmates according to race, ethnicity, age, gender, marital status, culture, religion, education, last known address, primary language, English comprehension, and place of birth, this report focuses on the current offenses of committed individuals, presenting a series of categories of offenses, including offenses against persons and property, sex, drug, and other offenses. Following various tables discussing sex, person, property, drug and other offenses by gender, this report details sentencing according to security levels, highlighting State, Federal, county, reformatory, and State prison types of correctional facilities. The last major section of this report details trends in the DOC custody population from January 1, 1993, to January 1, 2002. After addressing trends according to race, age, offense categories, minimum, maximum, and life sentencing, this report presents an extensive glossary of terms used throughout this document. An appendix details various types of offenses by category.
