Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, 2009

NCJ Number
232196
Date Published
2010
Length
3 pages
Annotation
Based on data collected for the 2009 Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), this report presents 2009 data on the number of law enforcement officers who were killed, feloniously or accidentally, and those officers who were assaulted while performing their duties.
Abstract
The data and information are presented in tables, charts, and narrative summaries. An explanation of the data indicates they reflect the number of victim officers, not the number of incidents or weapons used. Since law enforcement agencies use a different methodology for collecting and reporting data about officers who were killed than for those who were assaulted, information about assaults and officers killed are presented in separate databases, and the data are not always comparable. The report presents summaries of officers killed by State. Methodologies of data collection are described for officers killed, officers assaulted, and Federal officers killed or assaulted. 6 figures and 82 tables
