This report presents abstracts of the Massachusetts Department of Correction's (DOC's) 1990 reports on the DOC inmate population.
Abstract
One report presents a statistical profile of residents of State correctional institutions on January 1, 1990, and another report provides data on 1989 court commitments to the DOC. Other reports pertain to population movements in the DOC for 1989, statistics on releases from institutions during 1988 and 1989, background characteristics and recidivism rates for releases during 1987, and background characteristics and recidivism rates for releases from prerelease facilities during 1987. The remaining four research reports present data on the effect of community reintegration on recidivism rates for 1971 through 1987, court commitments to county facilities for 1988 and 1989, and a demographic description of Criminal-Offender-Record-Information (CORI) petitioners of DOC inmates. The latter research pertains to Massachusetts legislation which mandates that crime victims, family members of homicide, victims, and witnesses may request to be notified when the offender receives a temporary, provisional, or final release from custody, or when an offender escapes from custody. This led to a dramatic increase in the number of petitions for Criminal Offender Record Information filed with the Criminal History Systems Board. The research done by the DOC presents a statistical profile of a sample of CORI petitioners of DOC inmates and of the offenders who were the subjects of these CORI petitions.
