The Ministry of the Solicitor General of Canada is comprised of the Secretariat, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Correctional Service, the National Parole Board, the Security Intelligence Service, and the Office of the Correctional Investigator.
Abstract
The Secretariat provides support and policy advice to the minister in the areas of criminal justice and corrections, policing/law enforcement and security, research and development, and administration. The Mounted Police function as a national service and also offer some provincial and municiple police services. The Correctional Service is responsible for the custody and control of all inmates sentenced to 2 or more years. It also is responsible for providing health, education, training, employment, counseling, spiritual, and community programs. The National Parole Board grants parole and sets release conditions for all Federal inmates. The Intelligence Service conducts security assessments, protects Canadian secrets, and provides information on individuals and groups (including terrorists) that pose a threat to national security. Organizational structures, resource allocations, and expenditures of these agencies are described. Summaries of crime trends from 1962 to 1982 and of 1982 surveys of public attitudes toward crime and victimization also are provided.
