Mississippi's Office of Youth Services has been collecting data on cases processed by the State's youth courts since 1979.
Abstract
Data are used for juvenile justice planning and policy decisions by juvenile probation officers, public and private agencies, and individual researchers. Youth courts have exclusive jurisdiction in all proceedings concerning delinquency, status offenders, traffic offenses, neglect, abuse, and special proceedings. Jurisdiction attaches at the time of the offense and can continue until the child's 20th birthday, unless terminated sooner. The youth court statistical form collects data on total court activities related to handling children's cases. The form is completed by youth counselors or other designated staff in each court for each new juvenile referral. Completed forms are sent to the Mississippi Office of Youth Services on a weekly basis. The National Juvenile Court Data Archive receives data files from the Office of Youth Services. The user's guide to these files explains how to access data according to such variables as county, sex, race, prior delinquency referrals, detention, firearm involved, drug or alcohol involvement, probation or parole violations, children in need of supervision, and disposition. Appendixes contain the youth court statistical form and the original data collector's statement of acceptance.
