The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS), the centralized information resource of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), provides services that can enhance police professional development, management decisionmaking, and interaction with colleagues in addressing job problems.
Abstract
NCJRS provides the latest findings of NIJ research through its computerized data base encompassing criminal justice areas that include law enforcement, crime prevention, corrections, courts, and juvenile justice. The data base currently contains summaries of more than 80,000 domestic and foreign research reports, books, and articles. Police officers can access the data base by calling the toll-free number or by using DIALOG, a commercial information network available to libraries or those with personal computers. NCJRS has criminal justice specialists available to assist in accessing NCJRS resources. Other NCJRS services are the publication of 'NIJ Reports,' a bimonthly journal of news and announcements pertaining to criminal justice; the issuing of 'Books in Brief,' 4-page summaries of significant criminal justice publications; and topical searches that develop a list of documents on particular topics. In addition to the general data base on criminal justice, NCJRS collects specialized information on juvenile justice, alternative dispute resolution modes, and justice statistics. Professionals registered with NCJRS receive certain information advantages. A nominal charge covers the cost of some NCJRS services.
