ACTUAL COMMUNICATIONS TRAFFIC VOLUME OVER THE EXISTING TWO NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS IS COMPARED WITH THE VOLUMES PREDICTED BY THE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY IN 1975.
Abstract
STATE-TO-NATIONAL TRAFFIC GROWTH AND STATE-TO-STATE TRAFFIC GROWTH ARE EXAMINED. STATE-TO-NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS TRAFFIC REFERS TO MESSAGES BETWEEN STATES AND A CENTRAL, NATIONAL DATA BASE. STATE-TO-STATE TRAFFIC REFERS TO MESSAGES BETWEEN THE STATES, WITH EACH STATE DECIDING THE TYPE OF INFORMATION IT WILL RELEASE TO OTHER STATES. EACH MAJOR SECTION OF THE REPORT BEGINS WITH A STATEMENT OF THE ORIGINAL TRAFFIC PREDICTIONS AND A BRIEF STATEMENT OF THE MAJOR ASSUMPTIONS UPON WHICH THE PREDICTIONS WERE BASED. ACTUAL TRAFFIC GROWTH IS THEN PRESENTED AND COMPARED WITH THE PREDICTIONS. CHANGES IN ORIGINAL ASSUMPTIONS ARE THEN MADE, AND REVISED TRAFFIC PROJECTIONS ARE GIVEN. THE ANALYSIS OF THE STATE-TO-NATIONAL TRAFFIC LED TO A REDUCTION OF THE 1983 TRAFFIC TOTAL FROM 550.7 MILLION MESSAGES PER YEAR TO 256.5 MILLION; THE 1983 NATIONAL-STATE TRAFFIC TOTAL WAS REDUCED FROM 540.3 MILLION MESSAGES PER YEAR TO 246.6 MILLION. IN UNITS OF KILOBITS PER SECOND, THE 1983 STATE-NATIONAL TRAFFIC HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM 12,425 TO 5.769, AND THE 1983 NATIONAL-STATE TRAFFIC HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM 16.158 TO 9.729. THE 1984 STATE-STATE TRAFFIC TOTAL HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM 88.5 MILLION MESSAGES PER YEAR TO 45.0 MILLION MESSAGES PER YEAR; THE 1983 STATE-STATE TRAFFIC HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM 6.144 TO 3.285 KILOBITS PER SECOND. TABULAR DATA, GRAPHS, AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE PROVIDED. (RCB)
